FAQ #01 How does homeopathy work?
Homeopathic remedies work by stimulating the person's own healing potential. We have all had the experience of being ill, or perhaps injured, and then gradually recovering naturally. However, often we need help to regain our health, for example, if our symptoms are distressing, if we develop an on-going condition, or we suffer from repeated bouts of illness. Homeopathic remedies can provide the stimulus our system needs to put things back in order. The remedies do not suppress the symptoms, but when the imbalance in the system is resolved, the symptoms also resolve.

What kinds of health problems can homeopathy help?
Homeopathy is very effective in the treatment of acute illnesses, including viral conditions, such as colds, influenza and ear infections, and bacterial infections. It can be a real alternative to anti-biotics. It is also suitable for on-going or "chronic" conditions, such as asthma, eczema and arthritis. When a person has on-going health problems, whether minor or more serious, the whole person is taken into account in the choice of remedies. Because of this holistic, individualised approach to improving health and well-being, homeopathic treatment can benefit everyone, even if their symptoms do not have a clear diagnosis.

What are remedies made of?
Many remedies are made of natural substances such as plants or minerals. Some come from animal sources, such as milk. The substance is prepared in a homeopathic pharmacy with a process of dilution and succussion, which enhances the healing properties of the remedy while at the same time rendering it safe and free from side-effects. The resulting "medicating potency" is used to medicate pleasant-tasting sucrose or lactose pills. Remedies can also be taken as drops.

What questions will my homeopath ask me?
For acute ailments, such as 'flu or stomach upsets, questions focus on the symptoms you are experiencing, whether anything makes you feel better or worse, whether there seemed to be any cause for the illness, and whether things like your appetite and thirst, sleep, and mood have been affected. The questions may seem quite detailed. This is because each person with the same condition may need a different remedy, and the homeopath must try to match your experience of the illness to the best-indicated remedy.

For longer-term conditions, or repeated illness, the process is similar to begin with, but the homeopath will want to build up a more detailed picture, including such things as your past medical history; characteristics of your usual body temperature, appetite and digestion, thirst, sleep, energy levels; your lifestyle and any stresses; personal characteristics; and family medical history. The homeopath will spend an hour to an hour and a half, and will use the information to start devising a treatment plan for you. Over the course of your treatment, you may receive remedies to support particular organs, to address inherited tendencies, to deal with lasting effects of past illnesses or traumas, and to boost your overall constitution, as well as remedies which are indicated for your present condition.

How long will my treatment take?
This depends very much on factors such as your overall level of health, and how long you have had the condition. Bear in mind that your symptoms resolve by achieving a better level of health, so in many cases treatment is a process. That said, there are also many cases where results are quick and dramatic. Your homeopath will have a clearer idea of how long treatment is likely to take after your first consultation.

How often should I see my homeopath?
Again, this varies. To start with, follow-up visits are usually at between two and four weeks. Once you feel better, or if your general health is very good, you may want to visit your homeopath more occasionally, for example, if you need a pick-me-up, have been through a period of stress or overwork, or a health problem arises. Many patients come for a "constitutional" visit, two or three times a year, even if they don't have any particular problem, to talk over what has been going on in their lives and with their health recently. A constitutional remedy gives a boost to the system, and helps to keep you well and full of vitality. This kind of follow-up is particularly recommended for children, as homeopathic remedies can support them through their developmental stages, and other changes they are experiencing, such as starting a new school.
